Hawaii is a true melting pot of different nationalities, and Japanese people make up a large percentage of the population. Japanese (as well as other Asian countries’) culture and influence are important parts of Hawaii as a whole. I was also born in Japan, and both my parents spoke fluent Japanese. I take great care to consult with my Japanese speaking friends and try my best to ensure that my translations into Japanese are accurate. They might not be perfect. “Moke” is sort of Hawaiian slang for “redneck”. It can often mean a down to earth person that is unpretentious. In the Japanese language, adding “San” at the end of a name is a respectful way to address a person. It roughly translates to “Honorable Mr./Ms.” “Moke San” then, translates to “Honorable Mr. Redneck”! So, who's your redneck daddy now?
